“UVB-76” is a bursting piece of pulsating and emotional Electronica, and is the first single taken from James Adrian Brown’s forthcoming EP, “Terra Incognita” which is due for release on Castles in Space in February 2024.
This new track draws its inspiration from a peculiar Russian shortwave radio station, often referred to as a numbers station. This station continually emits brief, unvarying buzzing tones, operating around the clock, seven days a week. The persistent drone occasionally gives way to voice transmissions, suspected to carry coded messages decipherable by listeners possessing the requisite decoding skills.
James says of UVB-76…. “I started tuning in to the station almost every night before bed when I first stumbled upon it. I patiently waited, hoping to catch a random broadcast of an encrypted message. It gradually evolved into a mild obsession and served as some sort of comforting ritual. The notion that this older form of communication persisted in this enigmatic underground manner deeply connected with me. With all the vintage synthesizers and tape machine hardware I began using, it didn’t take long before these archaic nightly transmissions I absorbed gave birth to a track.”
