The Northerner was written in the winter of 2021 after a move to a quiet place. The pleasant pastoral ambiences I found myself listening to at the time suddenly felt incongruous to the dark, brooding environment I was in. In answer to this I reflected on times past, working and travelling through the cold, remote regions of ambivalent beauty in British Columbia and the inhospitable resource towns dotting the long lonely highways, with their dark complex stories of humanity contained within. The kind of things you will not find in tourism guides or carefully curated social media posts.
To build upon this ominous world I decided it necessary to use the sparest of sonic palettes possible and let the synths howl into the night. Many thanks to Colin for taking a chance on this weird, dark affair.
